Mark Bjerknes Home
Mark Bjerknes has managed stock market automation efforts in developed and developing marketplaces and served in central positions for both startup and mature technology and financial services companies. During his 20-year career in the technology and securities industries, Mark Bjerknes has developed in-depth expertise in exchange trading and surveillance systems design, development and implementation.
Early in his career, Mark Bjerknes worked in the commercial software industry, where he focused on product development and product management for an award-winning desktop product suite – an integrated data management, statistical analysis and scientific graphics platform – where he co-created early versions of exploratory data analysis tools like dynamic data graphics, and developed interactive data viewers, macro programming and command script interpreters. He left commercial desktop software to enter the financial services industry, joining an exchange trading systems software and consulting firm, at the time a subsidiary of a U.S. stock exchange with offices in the U.S. and overseas, where he led a team that developed one of the first thin-client distributed-architecture exchange trading systems. After several years working overseas, Mark Bjerknes returned to join an exchange-based dark pool, ultimately responsible for its U.S. equities product management, and then several years later joined one of the first ECNs approved by the SEC.
Mark Bjerknes has managed full-cycle development and implementation of continuous matching, semi-automated matching, and displayed and dark call auction systems for equities and fixed income products. Focusing on market structure, market surveillance and regulation, high performance complex event processing, computer systems performance and capacity, and data and IT governance, Mark Bjerknes has brought this expertise to markets in the United States and overseas. He has guided trading system development and implementation efforts for floor-based and automated markets in both national and competing marketplaces, working with onshore and offshore multi-organizational teams, and led full-cycle development and implementation of equities, options and fixed income market surveillance systems for both automated and hybrid markets.
